About Joseph Barrett

For over 40 years, Joseph Barrett of Lahaska has painted landscapes that are whimsical, vibrant, full of life and imagination. The work of this iconic, Bucks County artist is always a treat for the eyes. Barrett has lived and painted in the area since 1970, creating iconic images of Bucks County. At age 80, he continues to be a disciplined and prolific painter, working every day in his tiny studio. He admits, “I am driven to paint. It is part of how I live. Once I have an idea, the urge is there to do what I have imagined.”

Barrett designs, hand carves and signs many of his own frames which he finishes in metal leaf. His frames are reminiscent of noted Bucks County framers Frederick Harer, Bernard (Ben) Badura and Raymond Vanselous.

Barrett’s work is heavily influenced by the Fauvist style of Fern Coppedge, and George Sotter’s moonlit snow scenes. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and group shows. In 2010, his work was exhibited in the Pennsylvania State Capitol Rotunda, and in 2009 he won the “Best Traditional New Hope Style Painting” at Phillips’ Mill.
